Acetal resins are semi-crystalline, thermoplastic polymers commonly referred to as polyoxymethylene (POM). Acetal is noted for the following characteristics:

Acetal is made by the polymerization of formaldehyde. When overheated acetal can form gaseous decomposition products that are largely formaldehyde and can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. In addition, these gases can generate high pressures if confined. If material is not free to exit from the injection unit through the nozzle, it may blow back through the hopper. AGS Technology is well aware of these dangers and mitigates these risks by taking the following precautions:
- Scheduling software is coded to avoid processing acetal on equipment that is also used for incompatible resins such as PVC.
- Injection molding personnel are well trained on acetal start-up, operating, and shut-down procedures.
- Production areas are well ventilated with adequate exhaust.
